Innovative ideas to turn Tilburg into a cycling city
At the beginning of last year, the municipality of Tilburg developed a cycling action plan ‘Tilburg, the cycling city’. The central question in the plan is: how do we stimulate cycling in a pleasant and safe way? The municipality has developed innovative ideas to turn Tilburg into a cycling city. These ideas are summarized in four themes:
1. Improve the cycling infrastructure
The municipality wants to improve the cycling infrastructure in Tilburg. This means that the municipality will invest in the construction of new cycle paths and the improvement of existing cycle paths.
The municipality also wants to make the cycling infrastructure safer. This will be done by building more cycle paths, improving the lighting on cycle paths and providing more bike parking facilities.
2. Promote cycling
The municipality wants to promote the use of bicycles for both commuting and leisure. The municipality will do this by organizing cycling events and campaigns and providing information about the benefits of cycling.
The municipality will also work with schools and companies to encourage cycling among young people and employees.
3. Enforcement
The municipality wants to ensure that cyclists adhere to the traffic rules. The municipality will do this by increasing the number of traffic checks on cycle paths and issuing fines to cyclists who violate the traffic rules.
The municipality will also work with the police to combat bicycle theft.
4. Education
The municipality wants to educate cyclists about the traffic rules and the risks of cycling. The municipality will do this by providing information on cycling safety and organizing cycling courses.
The municipality will also work with schools to teach children about cycling safety.
