Magnitude 5.2 Quake Shakes Southern California
Multiple Fires Reported After Tremor
A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck Southern California on Friday night, shaking a large swath of the region and sparking multiple fires. The quake was centered near Lamont, California, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) northeast of Los Angeles, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The quake occurred at 9:09 p.m. PST and was felt as far away as Las Vegas and San Diego. There were no immediate reports of major damage or injuries, but several fires were reported in the area of the epicenter.
The USGS said the quake was the result of a strike-slip fault, which occurs when two blocks of the Earth's crust slide past each other horizontally. The fault that caused the quake is part of the San Andreas Fault system, which runs through much of California.
The quake is a reminder of the seismic hazards that face California. The San Andreas Fault is one of the most active faults in the world, and scientists believe it is capable of producing a magnitude 8.0 or greater earthquake.
Residents of California are urged to be prepared for earthquakes and to have an emergency plan in place. The USGS recommends that people have a supply of food and water on hand, as well as a battery-powered radio and flashlight.
