Kingdom of Belgium: A Tapestry of Cultures and Languages
A Segmented Landscape
The Kingdom of Belgium, officially known as Koninkrijk België (Dutch), Royaume de Belgique (French), and Königreich Belgien (German), comprises three major linguistic communities: Flemish, French, and German-speaking. Each community holds responsibility for specific aspects of the country's administration.
Flanders
The Flemish community, concentrated in the northern region of Flanders, predominantly speaks Dutch. It is home to cultural institutions such as the Flemish Parliament and Brussels Flemish Theatre.
Wallonia
The French-speaking Wallonia region, located in the south, boasts historical cities like Liège and Namur. Its public broadcaster, RTBF (Radio Television Belge Francophone), offers a range of programming in French.
German-speaking Community
The third official language community, German-speaking, resides primarily in the eastern region of Eupen. Flanders News serves as the English-language news website for the Flemish Broadcasting Corporation (VRT NWS), the news service of the Flemish public broadcaster.
